Maternity pads are essential. We recommend two packs of maternity pads, and then if you still need them, you can move on to a smaller size. If you’re breastfeeding, (and remember – breast is definitely best if you can!), breast pads are essential. We recommend the Natracare range, as they are totally chlorine free, and are over 95% biodegradable and compostable.

You won’t believe how many times a day you’ll be washing your hands: think 10-12 nappy changes per day, washing your hands before and afterwards, and that’s just for starters! We use and recommend Dr Bronner’s Liquid Soap in Baby-Mild, and the gorgeous Akin hand cream.

New Baby
Although it seems daunting at first, you'll be changing nappies 10-12 times a day with a newborn baby. It soon becomes second nature, and you'll soon be able to change nappies in your sleep. And trust us, you will!
The nappy size you choose in advance will depend on the weight of your baby. Smaller babies may fit best into the Newborn size (2-4 kgs), while larger babies will fit the mini size (3-6kgs). Premature babies are catered for, too, with a weight range of 1-3kgs in the premature size.
You can get samples in any of these sizes to have a look at them, and don't forget to have a look at our FAQs which might answer a few more questions.

Biodegradable nappy bags are very useful for wrapping dirty nappies when you're out and about, and so much more eco friendly than the standard plastic ones.

New babies really don't need much other than cotton wool and water to clean them, and we recommend the Simply Gentle Organic Cotton Wool. Just dip the cotton wool into water and wipe baby over.
As baby gets older, you may like to start using wipes on his little bottom, but they're really not necessary for the first few months.

Some babies are born with very dry and flaking skin, especially those that are overdue. Massaging your baby treats their skin and helps you bond. Research has shown that massaging your baby stimulates their nervous system and encourages brain development (click here to see more about baby massage and a 'how to' guide).

New babies don't need a lot of skin care products, and generally just plain water is enough. If they have a lot of hair you may want to try very mild hair and body wash, and it's always useful to have a nappy change cream on hand.
We love the Little Innoscents Hair and Body Wash, and the Weleda Calendula Cream Bath.
