How to work out nappy sizes for Tooshies by TOM

Every baby is different - some have chunky thighs, some have fat little bums, some have round tummies and some have skinny legs. That's why it can be difficult to find the perfect size nappy. You may find that although your baby is still within the recommended weight range for the size, the next size up is more absorbent and has a better fit, especially at night.

To help you find the perfect nappy size, we offer Tooshies nappy sample packs so you can try them out before you commit to a full pack or carton. Each sample pack contains two nappies.

Here's our handy guide to the Tooshies by TOM nappy sizes.

Tooshies nappy size guide:

Newborn: under 5 kgs

Infant: 4 to 8 kgs

Crawler: 7 to 12 kgs

Toddler: 10 to 16 kgs

Walker: 12 to 18 kgs

If you're looking for something smaller than the newborn size, you can try the Bambo Nature premature nappies. These have a weight range of 1 to 3 kgs.

Why do nappy sizes overlap?

Even though the suggested weight range may look right for your baby, you may find that you need the next size up or down to get the correct fit.

We usually suggest that once your baby gets to the top of the recommended weight range, it's time to switch up to the next size. So a 10kg baby may still fit into the crawler size, but you'll get more absorbency in the toddler size.

There is a greater overlap in sizes in the larger nappies to take into account that as babies grow, there can be a much bigger discrepancy in ages and shapes. It means that one 14kg baby is fine in the toddler size, but another 14kg baby needs the walker size.

Leaking nappy? How to know when to change nappy sizes

Your baby’s nappy may leak because you’ve got the wrong size nappy. We find that’s the most common cause of leaks and messes.

Have a look at the way the nappy fits on your baby. Are there red marks around baby’s tummy or thighs? Does the nappy feel a little too snug? If you’re nodding your head, it might be time to move to the next size up.

And if you’re getting regular leaks or blowouts, that can also be a sign that you need to move up to a more absorbent, and slightly bigger, nappy.

If there are gaps around baby’s tummy or legs, or the nappy is sitting quite high at the front or the back, that can be a sign that you need to try a smaller size.

Before you buy a pack or a bulk buy carton, you might want to try a nappy sample pack to get the perfect size nappy. Our nappy sample packs ship free, too.
